SWA #20

1)      "Bar pay-for-play in collegiate sports." Tampa Tribune 25 006 2011. 14. Web. 27 Oct. 2011. <http://www.lexisnexis.com.pallas2.tcl.sc.edu/hottopics/lnacademic/?verb=sr&csi=8422&sr=lni(536H-H4G1-JBV0-D2JD)>.

The author isn’t objective because he leading toward the issue of not paying college players for their play. This article is directed toward players and fans that have anything to do with this issue. The main idea is that athletes should not be paid outside of their scholarship because they have the opportunity to work just like non-athletes, also he states that getting paid to play is what professional sports is for. Things that I learned from this article is that when this issue is brought up in the NCAA meeting it will quickly be resolved because of some of the issues the author talks about. I disagree with this author because being an athlete I know how little time athletes have for jobs outside of school and practice. This article will be helpful because it is something that I can argue against.

2)      Goldman, Lee. "Sports and Antitrust: Should College Students Be Paid to Play." Notre Dame Law Review. 65. (1990): 206-61. Web. 27 Oct. 2011. <http://heinonline.org/HOL/Page?handle=hein.journals/tndl65&div=16&g_sent=1&collection=journals>.

The author is not bias because he argues for and against the issue. This article is related to athletes and fans as well as lawyers and government officials.  This article argues that athletes should stay amateurs but they should be paid because NCAA is making money off of them and the players don’t see any of it. I learned about the fair market value, which states that players should be paid according to how they perform.  This makes sense to me because I agree that if a player puts people in the seats then he should be paid more than someone that doesn’t ever play.  This will be helpful in my papers because it is an article that supports my side of the issue.

The athletic issue is the easiest for me to relate to because being an athlete this affects me directly. I think that this is the issue that I will choose becasue of how close this topic is to me.

Factory food artificially cheap, bad for your health

The claim is that factory food is unsafe and unsustainable and that America should produce more organic food. Using unnatural living environments cause the animals to get ill more often than they would at a pasture. Aquatic animals are being harmed as well because of the factory's waste runoff. I feel that there is not enough information here to convince me that factory food is less safe than organic food.

Analyzing images

http://theinspirationroom.com/daily/siteoftheday/2008/10/get-your-island-on.jpg
http://scratchbomb.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/1800Tequila.jpg
  1. I am analyzing two alcoholic beverage ads for my rhetorical paper. The Malibu ad isn't in any major publications but they advertise on TV and billboards as well as online. 1800 Tequila is advertised in Inventors Digest Magazine.
  2. By advertising online Malibu focuses on a younger age group compared to the 1800 Tequila, which looks for a more mature audience.
  3. Malibu
  • In the background there is a palm tree with a man dancing under it. There is also a trumpet and a martini glass. The ad uses warm colors like orange, red, and yellow. The font is simple and bold. The font sticks out because the words are different sizes. The text is off to the side of the pictures. In front of the pictures is the actual bottle.
4. 1800 Tequila
  • The man in the ad is sitting in the background in a business suit, he has a shot glass in his hand. in the foreground is the actual bottle. The ad is mostly dark, but the light focuses on the bottle and mainly on the man's face. The only writing in the ad is the writing on the label of the bottle.
5. I chose these ads because I felt that these two ads were selling the same product but had a very different style when it came to the marketing strategy. One is very laid back and the other is more grown up. The Malibu ad is more care free and have fun while the 1800 ad is more like stress relieving.

Postsecret Card Comments

What was the secret? Did you convey it explicitly or implicitly?
~ The secret is that Brennen lives with his mom even though he is 40. It was conveyed explicitly.

What kinds of visual elements did you chose to include? What is their purpose?
~The tattoo stuck out because he showed that he loved his mother but he didn't think that it would make him still live with his mom. It shows that the little boy is happy vs. how he would feel when he is 40. It makes people laugh.

How did you manipulate the text (fonts, colors, size, positioning on the card)? Why?
~ I chose to use a white font because it stuck out the best against the black background. It was written very plainly because it was supposed to represent a little boy writing it.

How did you want to portray the persona you assumed?
~ He was portrayed as someone who made wrong choices.

How did you want to the viewer to feel about the secret?
~  I wanted the viewer to laugh, but yet feel sorry for him.
